"Who is he?" Exhibit / "그는 누구인가?" 전시정보

Each individual has multiple "faces" due to the complexity of our social roles. Yet some people, especially public figures, may have more distinct faces due to the nature of their work, and sometimes this can lead to internal psychological conflict and questioning of "Who is the real me?" Yet it is important to embrace these different facets of identity as part of the "real" me. Musical artist Kim Nam-joon (RM) is a wonderful example of how someone can show different aspects of themselves-- being a charismatic, assertive presence on stage with visually striking fashion, while also being a low-key, nature and art-loving individual off stage.

This exhibition portrays BTS leader Kim Nam-joon in different scenarios, showcasing his interests and talents. Divided into three sections-- nature, art, and stage-- visitors will be able to see the portraits of Kim and also engage in artistic activities and art book reading as an act "Namjooning"-- a term coined to refer to visiting museums or nature.

This exhibit was curated specifically with people who don't normally visit art museums in mind. The artist, who created a virtual museum for RM fan art last year (RMgallery.net) was shocked when many visitors expressed that it was their first time going to a museum and realized that art needed to be more accessible. In a time when the Korean art market which is increasingly focusing on art as a means of collection and investment, the artist hopes that people will understand that at its essence, all one needs to appreciate art is love. The artwork featured include both originals and prints, digital and analog, paintings and craft, showcasing diversity of art forms.

The artist: Kiru (Yvette Wohn, Ph.D.) is a Korean mixed media artist and scholar based in the U.S. Like RM, Kiru is a name she uses only in artistic contexts. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and was featured in a curated collection on Saatchi Art. Her work is characterized by bold colors and usage of Korean and English graffiti. The text in the background of the paintings represents the rhythm of rap in RM’s songs. When not producing art, Dr. Wohn directs the Social Interaction Lab (socialinteractionlab.com) at New Jersey Institute of Technology where she researches identity and social interactions in virtual environments. She has published over 120 research papers and has received millions of dollars in research funding from government and industry.

복잡한 사회 속에서 살아가면서 우리는 다양한 "얼굴"을 가지고 산다. 부모, 자식, 형제, 직장인, 학생, 연인 등 사회적 역할에 따라 다른 모습을 보이는 것은 어쩌면 당연한 것이다. 하지만 특별한 직종을 가진 사람들, 특히 공인은 일의 특성상 일반인보다는 더욱 다양한 모습을 가질 수 있으며 이것은 때로는 "진정한 나는 누구인가"를 의문케 하는 자아 정체성에 대한 내분과 갈등이 있을 수 있다. 하지만 그 다양한 모습들을 가진 것 자체가 정체성일 수 있다.

아티스트 김남준(RM)은 다양한 모습을 가진 공인이다. 무대 위에서는 화려한 패션과 카리스마, 일할 때는 리더십과 투철한 직업정신을 발휘하지만 사적으로는 평범한 의상 차림에 친구들과 보내는 시간, 자연, 미술 등을 즐기는 것을 볼 수 있다. 이번 전시는 그의 관심사를 반영하여 자연, 미술, 무대의 테마로 나눠져 있다. "남준하다"는 미술관이나 자연속으로 여행하는 것을 의미하듯, 방문자는 걸려 있는 초상화의 감상 뿐만 아니라 직접 예술 프로젝트와 아트북 독서 활동에 참여할 수 있다.

이번 전시는 평소에 미술을 어렵게 여겨온 사람들이 편하고 재미있게 미술을 접근하는 데에 의미를 두고 있다. 작가는 작년에 RM 팬아트 가상미술관 (RMgallery.net) 을 만들었을 때 '처음으로 미술관 갔다'는 너무나도 많은 글을 보고 충격을 받아 이번 전시를 기획했다. 투자와 소유에 과열되고 있는 한국 미술시장이지만 관람객은 미술의 근본은 사랑이라는 것을 느꼈으면 하는 것이 작가의 바램이다. 원화와 판화, 디지털과 아나로그, 회화와 공예 등 작품의 형태도 다양하다.

작가설명: 작가 기루 (Yvette Wohn, Ph.D.)는 믹스미디어 아티스트이자 미국 뉴저지공대 컴퓨팅대학 교수다. RM과 같이 기루는 예술활동할때만 사용하는 ‘호’이다. 기루의 작품은 한국적인 소재를 그래피티와 강렬한 색으로 표현하는 것이 특징이다. 작품 배경속 글자의 등장은 랩의 동적인 리듬을 표현한 것이다. 원교수는 소셜인터랙션랩 (socialinteractionlab.com) 디렉터이며 메타버스와 소셜미디어, 온라인 커뮤니티 등의 전문가로서 활발한 연구활동을 하고 있어 미 정부와 기업 등으로부터 수십억 규모의 연구과제를 진행하고 있다.
